Most states have a plate availability check on their DMV, BMV or MVD website. You type the plate and it tells you
whether it can be ordered. A few states put that check behind a CAPTCHA or an account login, and some don't offer one
online at all.
Check one plate everywhere at once
License Plate Scan checks the states we cover for you, so you can type a plate once and see
the answer for every state, without visiting each DMV site.
What the results mean
Available. The state's lookup says you can order it right now.
Taken. Someone has it. It can come back later if they stop renewing it.
Not allowed. The state won't issue it, often because of its content. Only some states' lookups tell you this.
Likely available. In a few states we can only see whether a plate is registered, not whether it can be
ordered. Nothing has the plate, but the state could still have it reserved, so confirm before you order.
Available isn't a guarantee
Availability can change any time, and the state still reviews your request when you order. Order soon after a plate
shows as open, and here's why a plate can still be refused.
If it's taken, watch it
Add the plate to a watch list, or set a snipe for a pattern (like any 3-letter plate, or plates ending in GT), and
we'll message you on Discord the moment a match opens. Premium gets those alerts instantly.
